Everyday heroes, everyday spaces.

In a time when division and social isolation pull us apart, service brings us together. Behind every thriving neighborhood are unsung heroes—teachers, food bank volunteers, first responders, and student organizers—working tirelessly to keep our communities strong. Yet, their stories often remain invisible.

At the National Museum and Center for Service, we believe that local history shouldn’t sit behind glass cases. Through our Everyday Heroes, Everyday Spaces campaign, your support equips local Community Curators and youth leaders with open-source toolkits, masterclasses, and printing stipends to build living Museums of Service directly in high-traffic public hubs like libraries, schools, and town halls.

Why your support matters

  • Visible generosity inspires action: When people perceive their communities as being more generous, they are more likely to take action and get involved themselves.
  • Service is common ground: 93% of exhibit visitors agree that seeing local service stories proves service can bridge divides and strengthen our country.
  • Youth in the curator’s seat: When students interview local heroes and co-create public exhibits, they develop essential civic skills and build long-lasting community trust.

Take local history out of glass cases and put it directly into community spaces. Help us reach our goal and give before December 31 to support student-led exhibit teams for 2027 civic action!

If you are age 70½ or older, you can direct your IRA custodian to send contributions directly from your retirement account to the museum. Because the funds move directly from your custodian (eg. Vanguard/Fidelity) to an eligible charity, neither you nor the museum pays federal income taxes on the transfer.
